Tutu Puoane with The Brussels Jazz Orchestra
Miriam Makeba is one of the most famous artists from South Africa. In the 50s she broke through as a jazz singer. Besides jazz, Makeba sang pop and Xhosa and Zulu folk music. Makeba's cultural status gave her political clout - she was an active opponent of the apartheid era which yielded her thirty years exile.
Miriam Makeba collaborated with musicians such as Hugh Masekela, Harry Belafonte and Paul Simon. She scored her biggest hit with 'Pata Pata'.
On 10/11/08 Miriam Makeba died at age 76.
The BJO and Tutu have chosen from her South African extensive repertoire. The songs have been reworked by a team of BJO arrangers to yield the unique BJO spirit: exciting and adventurous, with, for the occasion, a trace of Africa. And, as always, with much passion for the music.

yes! shut down your computer and run to fnac and get yourself a copy of 'quiet now' (so says ewout)
"This is a remarkable statement by a South-African singer/musician and three Belgian musicians. Just another proof that this afro-american virus contaminates anybody anywhere.
Miss Puoane shows great jazz-feeling and of course takes into her native roots several themes which she sometimes decorates with tasteful overdubs.
The material is mostly compositions by the musicians except themes by Jack Van Poll (3), Joni Mitchell (8), McCoy Tyner (1).
Ewout Pierreux, Nicolas Thys and Lieven Venken weave a powerful and high level framework, recorded masterfully by Chris Weeda.
Bravo and good luck ! "
